My Policy Priorities
In Congress I will work across the political divide to build bridges and bring pragmatic solutions to strengthen the families and small businesses across our district. My top policy priorities are:
Building the Opportunity Economy
Trickle-down economics has failed the working-class families of America. Over the past 40 years, it turned millionaires into billionaires and left working families behind.
Wages remained flat, while worker productivity soared – along with consumer prices and corporate profits. Today, many families now rely on two incomes to live a middle-class lifestyle, while working class families often hold two and three jobs just to make ends meet.
It’s time to Create the Opportunity Economy, where every worker has the chance to succeed through tax structure and policies that increase worker incomes and invests in education, infrastructure and building the economy from the bottom up, and middle out.
Wellness: Physical, Mental and Environmental
We’ve been through a lot these past few years. We endured a global pandemic, economic turmoil and civil unrest, an attack on our Capitol and our democracy – plus a constant barrage of divisiveness and negativity on social media.
I get it. It’s hard to feel joy some days. And unfortunately, the data shows a dramatic increase in stress and depression – especially among children – and a surprising decrease in average life expectancy in America.
In Congress, I will focus on the overall wellness of the residents of our district from a physical, mental and environmental perspective to improve the quality of life, health, and once again, increase the life expectancy for everyone.
Protecting Our Families:
I believe in the right to bear arms and protecting the 2nd Amendment. I also believe in the rights of families to send their kids to school and to go to work without being shot and killed.
My children go to school not far from Oxford High School where a 15-year-old student killed four of his classmates. I heard the stories of my friends’ children hiding in their classrooms texting their ‘good-byes’ to their parents.
Folks, we cannot be “Oxford Strong” then turn around like my opponent has and support the NRA position that the answer to gun violence in schools is more guns in schools. That position is 100% giving in to the notion that we cannot protect the safety of our communities.
I believe we CAN and must work together to bring about commonsense ways to protect our Constitutional rights for both our families and responsible gun owners.
Family-Focused Reproductive Freedom:
As my wife and I relied on fertility treatments to start our own family, like countless others across America, reproductive freedom is more than a woman’s right to control her own reproductive choices, it’s a right of families to decide when to have children – and how.
Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2022, reproductive freedom in America has been in turmoil: more than 1/3 of women of childbearing age without the legal right to determine her personal reproductive decisions – with women in rural areas most adversely affected.
Since 2022, more than 175,000 women in America had to travel to other states to get the reproductive care they needed – often at the risk to their own lives. This state-by-state approach to reproductive freedom puts life-saving decisions in the hands of local politicians, resulting in risk to women, families and children.
I will fight for family-focused reproductive freedom.
Protecting Senior Retirement:
A promise to retirees must be a promise kept. When workers pay into Social Security, a pension or a 401K plan, it’s an agreement workers made in lieu of wages in order to save for retirement.
Despite these agreements, millions of individual pension and retirement plans are lost each year due to business failures, negligent financial planning and fraud. That’s on top of the threats to the solvency and functionality of our nation’s Social Security program.
We must protect our seniors, most of who rely solely on social security and small personal retirement accounts to survive.
Border Security, Immigration Reform & Defending Our Homeland:
For more than 20 years our border and immigration politics have failed to keep up with the times. Political and economic turmoil in South and Central America have brought record numbers of migrants to our southern border, while politicians postured and played politics with reforms to score political points – even killing the first bipartisan border bill in over 20 years.
We’ve kicked the can down the road and need to take action now.
Everyone Deserves to Be Treated Equal:
For too long, our friends, neighbors, co-workers who come from different religious or ethnic backgrounds – and members of the LGBTQ+ community – have been denied full legal access to the American dream.
This includes being barred from schools, places of worship, jobs, serving in our military, and loving the person of their choice.
I’d like to think we’ve grown past this, unfortunately we still see members of our community discriminated against because of their religion, national origin or gender, and more recently, these people have been vilified for political gain.
Everyone deserves to be treated equal in America and throughout the world.
Energizing Environmental Sustainability:
Whether it’s a farm looking to preserve their land for future harvests or neighborhoods where families live and play, I will always support federal and state efforts to ensure our natural resources and environment are safe, clean and sustainable for generations to come. This includes support to clean up PFAS/forever chemicals and dramatically limiting carbon emissions.
Climate change is one of those things people don’t like to think about, but we need to.
Whether or not you agree with climate change, reducing carbon emissions is a trend countries around the world are pursuing. And despite the naysayers, America has a choice – do we lead and create jobs and a more sustainable economy, or do we retreat and leave this for other countries to resolve?
These are the priorities I will work on to bring greater prosperity, improved quality of life and a more just and sustainable future for the residents and businesses of Michigan’s 9th Congressional District.
Sincerely,
Clint St. Mosley
